Mr Juhani Tervala to be Director-General of the new Transport Infrastructure Agency

Mr Juhani Tervala has been appointed Director-General at the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency with effect from 1 January 2010. The Government of Finland announced the appointment on 22 December 2009. Appointment to the post of Director-General is for a period of five years ending on 31 December 2014.

Mr Tervala is a Master of Science in Technology, and has worked at the Ministry of Transport and Communications since 1992. He became Director-General of the Ministry's Transport Policy Department in 2008, prior to that he was Director-General of the Administration Department. Before joining the Ministry he worked with the Finnish National Road Administration.

As of 1 January 2010 the six agencies within the administrative sector of the Ministry of Transport and Communications will merge into two larger units, Transport Infrastructure Agency and Transport Safety Agency.

The Transport Infrastructure Agency will be responsible for the duties of the Finnish Rail Administration and Road Administration and for the duties of the Maritime Administration, excluding the maritime safety function.

The Agency will cover the entire transport system and all modes of transport, excluding aviation. It will ensure that Finland has an effective, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and safe transport system serving the travel and transport needs of people and businesses.

The Transport Infrastructure Agency will be a central government unit operating under the Ministry of Transport and Communications' guidance.
