Operating licences

In cases where an operator other than YLE wishes to apply for a radio licence, the licence decision is made by the Government.

Operating licences are granted for local and regional radio services and for special radio broadcasting purposes. The latter may operate across a broader area than regional radio, and this area is defined separately in the operating licence.

Short-term operating licences for radio broadcasting, where the broadcasting duration is no more than three months and its weekly duration no more than eight hours, must be obtained from the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA).

YLE’s radio channels

YLE’s radio channels include YLE Radio 1, YleX, YLE Radio Suomi and regional radios, YLE Puhe and Swedish-language YLE Radio Vega and YLE Radio Extrem.

YLE also has several regional radio channels and services, such as the Sámi-language Sámi Radio. Some channels are transmitted via television too.
