The European Network and Information Security Agency, ENISA, came into being following the adoption of Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council in 2004.
ENISA helps the Member States, EU institutions and the business community to prevent, address and respond to network and information security problems.
The Agency assists Member States and EU institutions in issues related to network and information security. It collects and analyses new data on information security. The aim of the Agency is to promote a well-functioning internal market within the EU.
The Agency’s first term of operation was for five years, from 14 March 2004 to 13 March 2009. Its mandate was later continued with three years until March 2012. It is located in the city of Heraklion in Crete, Greece. ENISA employs 50 people from around Europe.
In Finland, operations related to ENISA fall within the administrative sector of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The Ministry actively follows and participates in ENISA’s work. For Finland, ENISA is one channel in which information security issues can be exchanged and discussed.
Each Member State is represented in the Agency’s management board. ENISA also has a network of national contact persons, liaison officers.
Finland’s representative in the Management Board is Ms Mari Herranen, Ministerial Adviser from the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Finland’s liaison officer is Ms Mirka Meres-Wuori, Senior Adviser at the Ministry.
