Government maintains target speed for broadband services

The Government has made a decision in principle outlining the development of basic levels of Internet service, in addition to high-speed Internet connections. The Government is to keep the hundred megabit objective to be achieved by 2015, which was set during the election period. By 2015, high-speed 100 Mbit/s broadband connections will be available at no more than two kilometres from all permanent places of residence.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications decision to grant Viking Line EUR 28 million for vessel investments improving the level of environmental protection has been approved by the European Commission.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications will join the central government phone numbering system. From 3 May 2012 onwards, the number to the Ministry's switchboard is +358 295 16001. Following the switchover, phone calls made to the existing mobile phone numbers will be directed to the new numbers. Calls to landline phones will be directed to the new numbers only until September 2012.
Timetable for spectrum auction to be brought forward

Preparations are underway for the auctioning of the 800 MHz frequency band allocated to 4G networks. The Ministry of Transport and Communications has sent out for comments a draft act on spectrum auction. The purpose is to organise the auction earlier than originally planned. According to the proposal, the process would be launched during 2012: following entry into force of the act, licences would be announced open for application, and the auction would be held in early 2013.
