Passenger and goods transport
1. Passenger transport
Passenger transport policy is implemented through legislation, guidelines and transport service purchases. The aim is a safe and environmentally friendly transport system.
According to the Government Programme, transport policy must strive to ensure economically, socially and environmentally sustainable structures of society and regional development. In terms of our national and international competitiveness, it is also crucial to have fast, safe and economical goods transport.
Purchased train, sea, air, bus and coach transport services ensure that there are basic public transport services available across Finland. The Ministry is also making efforts to promote walking and cycling.
2. Goods transport
As far as goods transport is concerned, the Ministry's priorities are to curb the rising costs, secure an efficient transport market and strengthen logistics know-how. The purpose is to increase healthy and prevent unfair competition, which helps ensure efficient and versatile services.
3. International goods transport
The Finnish Customs is responsible for granting bilateral goods transport permits and transit permits for international traffic passing through Finland, such as permits for goods traffic between Finland and Russia.
Other transport permits, such as ECMT licences, and permits for transport from third countries, are granted by the Finnish Transport Safety Agency. The Agency also issues any oversize and overweight permits needed by Russian or other CIS transportation companies for entry into Finland.
