Jorma Ollila to chair working group on fair transport

The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications has appointed a working group to map out the way towards a fair and intelligent transport system. Mr Jorma Ollila, Chairman of Nokia's Board of Directors, is to chair the working group.
The new Saimaa Canal lease agreement to enter into force

The new lease agreement on the Saimaa Canal will enter into force on 17 February 2012. The scope of application of the agreement will be expanded from goods transport to also cover passenger traffic, icebreaking, pilotage and overnight stays of pleasure crafts.
Commission approved environmental aid scheme for Finnish vessels

The European Commission has approved an aid scheme for vessels that aims at environmental protection. In its decision, the Commission considers the Finnish aid scheme to meet the requirements set in the guidelines on aid for environmental protection.

Fairway dues to rise

The Finnish Government proposes a 9.5 per cent increase to fairway dues in maritime transport. As per the proposal, the increase is to be equally targeted at all payment categories.
Progress made towards a treaty on a common North European airspace

Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Norway initialled the contents of a treaty establishing the North European Functional Airspace Block (NEFAB) on Friday 9 December 2011.
Finland and Russia discussed frequency issues in Helsinki

The Finnish-Russian working group on frequency management has discussed the details of making the 800 MHz frequency band available for broadband use. The working group met on 9 December in Helsinki. The Finnish delegation was led by Director-General Mr Juhapekka Ristola, and the Russian delegation was led by Mr Juri Zhuravel from the Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media.
Greenhouse gas emissions from transport have increased

The second progress report on the Climate Policy Programme for the Ministry of Transport and Communications’ administrative sector has been released. Monitoring data indicates that transport-related greenhouse gas emissions have risen since the previous study.
Ownership steering of Arctia Shipping Ltd and Meritaito Ltd to be transferred 21 November 2011

The responsibility for ownership matters related to Arctia Shipping Ltd and Meritaito Ltd will be transferred from the Ministry of Transport and Communications to the Prime Minister's Office. The amendment comes into force on 21 November 2011 which is also when the transfer takes effect.
Minister Kyllönen to attend IMO Assembly

The Finnish Minister of Transport Ms Merja Kyllönen will participate in the Assembly of the International Maritime Organization IMO in London on 21–22 November 2011. Alongside decisions relating to the activities of the organisation, the meeting will also discuss maritime safety and environmental issues.
