  • Finland to have observer status in Alliance for Language Technologies

    On 8 May 2024, the Government submitted a Union communication to Parliament, proposing that Finland have observer status in the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for the Alliance for Language Technologies (ALT-EDIC).

  • Minister Ranne: GPS interference from Russia taken seriously, authorities work to ensure flight safety

    GPS interference in aviation has been debated in public. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom published a press release saying that it is safe to fly to and in Finland. Traficom is responsible for flight and aviation safety as well as for monitoring GPS interference.

  • Comments requested on draft memorandum on EU Data Act's national implementation

    The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft memorandum concerning the national implementation of the EU Data Act. The deadline for submitting comments is 31 May 2024. The Ministry has also published a study, which was conducted by the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, on the markets covered by the Data Act in Finland.

  • Amendments to driving times and rest periods of drivers engaged in occasional bus and coach transport services

    Amendments to the EU Regulation on minimum breaks and rest periods were published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 2 May 2024. Specific rules were included in the Regulation to change the driving times and rest periods in the occasional passenger transport sector. In most cases, occasional passenger transport means chartered transport by bus or coach. The sector has special characteristics that the goods transport or regular coach and bus transport sectors do not share.

    On 30 April 2024, Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne, Norwegian Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård and Swedish Minister of Infrastructure Andreas Carlson signed a joint statement on developing the transport system.

  • Nordic transport ministers to meet in conjunction with NATO exercise in Narvik

    Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will visit Narvik, Norway, from 29 to 30 April 2024. Together with the Norwegian and Swedish transport ministers, she will observe NATO’s Immediate Response 2024 defence exercise, which will practise military mobility and reception of military support.

  • Government proposes waiving the must-carry obligation for radio

    On 25 April 2024, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal to amend the Act on Electronic Communications Services. The must-carry obligation for radio programmes would be removed from the Act, the provision on the revocation of radio licences would be amended and other technical amendments would be made.

  • Amendments to Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport circulated for comments

    The Ministry of Transport and Communications invites comments on the draft proposal on amendments to the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport and certain related acts. The deadline for submitting comments is 20 June 2024.

  • Government proposes approval of amendments to Road Traffic Convention

    The Government gave a proposal to Parliament by which the amendments to the Road Traffic Convention would be approved and brought into force. The main objective of the amendments is to coordinate the International Road Traffic Convention with the current UN Regulations concerning lighting devices.
