Jussi Kaurola to be Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute

The Government has appointed Jussi Kaurola, 58, Doctor of Philosophy, as Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The appointment is for a fixed term from 1 September 2020 to 31 December 2023.

Kaurola graduated as Doctor of Philosophy in 1996. He has worked at the Meteorological Institute as a senior researcher since 1996. In 2013-2017, he was Director of the Weather and Safety Division, and since January 2018 he has been Director of the Weather, Sea and Climate Service Centre.

Kaurola currently acts as interim Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute as the previous Director General Juhani Damski was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment from the beginning of June. The holder of the permanent position of Director General, Petteri Taalas, is on leave of absence acting as Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) until the end of 2023.
