Kirsi Karlamaa appointed Director of Transport and Communications Agency

On 19 December 2018, the Government appointed Kirsi Karlamaa, M.Sc. (Tech.), as Director-General of the Transport and Communications Agency, TrafiCom. The appointment is for five years, starting on 20 December 2018.

Karlamaa will first work at the Ministry of Transport and Communications and transfer to the Agency on 1 January 2019.  

She has worked as Director-General of the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority since the beginning of 2016. Before that she held several managerial positions at the Communications Regulatory Authority and acted as Director of its Spectrum Management Division and National Cyber Security Centre, for example. 

The Transport and Communications Agency will be a national operator in the development of the information society and the transport system. It will monitor and promote the transport and communications markets and services. The Agency will be an authority serving people and businesses in permit, licence, registration, approval, safety and security matters. It will also be responsible for arranging the necessary examinations in the sector.

The number of employees at the Agency will be around 900.

Traficom will start operating on 1 January 2019. The new agency will bring together the Transport Safety Agency, Communications Regulatory Authority and certain functions of the Transport Agency. The current Transport Agency will continue as Transport Infrastructure Agency.
