Minister Harakka commissions a study on support for journalism
The Ministry of Transport and Communications will urgently launch a study on the support for journalism in the exceptional situation caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka appointed Elina Grundström, editor and author, as the rapporteur. Grundström acted as chair of the Council for Mass Media in 2016–2019.
“The exceptional situation has increased the need for reliable and fact-based journalism. At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis has weakened the economy of the media sector. That is why I have commissioned a study on measures that could be introduced quickly to support the content of the media and the collaborative and local approach in services,” Minister Harakka says.
The study will focus on the need and allocation of speedy support and the criteria for granting it. The aim is also to find out whether entirely new forms of support are needed.
In addition to the rapporteur’s report, the Ministry of Transport and Communications will also examine other forms of immediate support. The outcome of the studies will be published in the week beginning on 27 April 2020.
