Minister of Transport and Communications Sanna Marin will open a high-level conference on airspace management on Thursday, 12 September 2019, in Brussels. The conference will be arranged by Finland's Ministry of Transport and Communications together with the European Commission. It is one of the main events in the transport sector during Finland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The conference will focus on the future of the Single European Sky. The conference is prompted by air traffic congestion that results from inadequate air navigation capacity, especially in Central Europe.

In autumn 2018, the Commission appointed the so-called "wise persons group" to find out measures to improve the situation. The report was published in April 2019. In the summer, stakeholder groups in aviation, under the leadership of the Commission, prepared a shared view on how the political process necessary to implement the group's recommendations should proceed.

The joint stakeholder declaration will be handed over to Minister Marin and European Commission Director-General for Mobility and Transport Henrik Hololei during the conference. Member states will discuss the declaration in the aviation working group of the Council of the European Union. The matter is expected to be on the agenda of the December Transport Council

Besides the conference programme, Minister Marin will meet Eamonn Brennan, Director General of the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, Eurocontrol, and Patrick Ky, Executive Director of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, EASA.
