More information about the use of the Saimaa Canal maintenance road and checks on Finnish vessels
Buses engaged in scheduled international service are again allowed to use the Saimaa Canal maintenance road and Nuijamaa border crossing point.
The traffic restriction that was earlier set on the maintenance road only applies to buses in non-regular service, such as charter buses and coaches. The restriction will remain in force from 11 December 2017 to 31 March 2018 and apply to traffic flows from both directions, from Finland and Russia.
Harri Pursiainen, Permanent Secretary of the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications, discussed the matter with Sergei Aristov, Russian Deputy Minister of Transport, on 15 January 2018. Deputy Minister Aristov said that the effects of limiting other bus and coach traffic will be assessed and the decision will be reviewed, if necessary.
The discussion also covered the increased number of checks on and stopping of Finnish vessels at Russian ports. Aristov said that Russia has increased resources for vessel checks.
The Finnish and Russian maritime authorities will go through the cases of checks and stoppings. It will also be examined how the regularity of communications between the Finnish and Russian inspection authorities could be increased.
