During the TTE Council lunch meeting, the ministers discussed the Commission's Free Flow of Data Initiative. Introduced late 2015, the Commission is expected to give a Communication on its more detailed plans early 2017.

The Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Anne Berner called for an ambitious approach to this Initiative. The Digital Single Market Strategy and the Free Flow of Data Initiative are essential building blocks of the European data economy, aiming at fuelling innovations, growth and employment.

- The widely-debated issue of data location restrictions is an essential question to solve. Additionally, more discussion and solutions are needed on the other aspects of the Initiative, such as access and portability of data, and interoperability. Access to data is an inherent part of new mobility services, and new innovative approaches, like the MyData model empowering individuals in the management and use of their personal data, are vital for taking the lead in the data economy, Minister Berner says.

The Free flow of Data Initiative is part of the European Commission's Digital Single Market Strategy aiming at strengthening the foundations of digital markets and growth in Europe.
