Minister of Transport and Communications Anne Berner will meet Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization IMO Kitack Lim on Thursday 22 February 2018. Topics on the meeting agenda include maritime automation, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and utilisation of digitalisation in logistics.

According to Minister Berner, the meeting is important because approximately 90% of Finland's exports and around 80% of its imports are transported by sea.

"The high proportion of maritime transport in foreign trade shipping requires smooth, reliable, safe, environmentally sound and affordable sea lines of communication. The international provisions of the IMO strongly guide the maritime development. The meeting provides an excellent opportunity to discuss the themes on the agenda that are important for Finland," Berner says.

Minister Berner and Secretary-General Lim will meet in connection with an International Conference on Harmonized Implementation of the Polar Code to be held in Helsinki. The Conference is part of Finland's Chairmanship Programme for the Arctic Council.
