Minister of Housing and Communications Krista Kiuru has stated that development of broadband connections will continue to be one of the focus points of the Government's communications policy this term. Kiuru said the need for fast connections is most apparent in rural areas.

"Areas in which services are long distances away are in dire need of fast electronic communications. Good connections are a necessity especially for agricultural and travel businesses," Kiuru said on 3 July in Pori at the 150th anniversary celebration for ProAgria.

The Government's goal is to ensure that by 2015 all permanent residences, places of business and public administration locations are at most 2 km from a high-speed 100 Mbit/s broadband connection.

According to Kiuru, the goal is to initiate the project early in the parliamentary term as soon as its pilot phase is complete.
