More information about the traffic restrictions on the Saimaa Canal maintenance road
Last week the Russian Ministry of Transport told about its decision to restrict bus and coach traffic on the Saimaa Canal maintenance road from 11 December 2017–31 March 2018. According to information received on Tuesday, 12 December 2017, the restrictions will apply to all bus and coach traffic, including traffic flows from Finland. The Russian Ministry of Transport justifies the decision by traffic safety reasons.
During the time of the traffic restrictions, a detour of the Brusnitchnoe border crossing point is intended to go through Torfjanovka and Svetogorsk border crossing points.
The restrictions will give rise to changes also in Finland. Instead of the Nuijamaa border crossing point, bus and coach traffic will be directed to Imatra and Vaalimaa.
The matter will be discussed by Harri Pursiainen, Permanent Secretary of the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications, and Sergei Aristov, Vice Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, at a meeting in Helsinki on 14 December.
