National Transport System Plan under discussion on 16 September

Preparations for Finland's first 12-year national transport system plan are currently underway.

On 16 September, the Ministry of Transport and Communications will organise a stakeholder event online to discuss the measures of the national transport system plan and to report on the next steps. The discussion will be based on the current version of the plan.

The event will be opened by Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka at 10.00. Subsequently, ministry officials will report on the progress of the preparations and present the current action plan and the impacts of the draft plan.

The public will have the opportunity to ask questions and to comment on the draft plan via the webcast message wall, starting at 13.00.

The current version of the plan has been published in the Gateway to Information on Government Projects. All material related to the project and the programme of the stakeholder event are available in the Gateway to Information on Government Projects.

The preparation of the national transport system plan will continue during the autumn. Feedback received on the current version of the plan will be taken into account in further preparation. The draft plan will be circulated for comments in early 2021.

The discussion on the transport system plan will continue on the Ministry's Facebook account on Thursday 17 September at 9.00-10.00. Experts from the Ministry of Transport and Communications will answer questions, which can be sent in advance.

What is the national transport system plan?

The national transport system plan concerns the whole country and all transport modes. The plan will guide the state's development of the Finnish transport system.

The national transport system plan aims to add a longer-term perspective to the development of the Finnish transport system.

The plan is approved for 12 years at a time. It also includes an action plan compiling the measures by the state and municipalities for the development of the transport system.

The national transport system plan will be prepared at parliamentary level and in close interaction with stakeholders.

The first national transport system plan is scheduled to be completed in spring 2021. It is subject to the approval by the Government.
