The exemptions to driving times and rest periods issued for heavy transport due to the coronavirus epidemic will expire. Normal driving times and rest periods will apply again as of 1 June 2020.

The temporary exemptions entered into force on 27 March 2020 and their validity was extended with minor adjustments on 26 April 2020. The decree on exemptions will be in force until 31 May 2020.

The exemptions are subject to the approval of the European Commission. The Commission considers that as of June there will no longer be sufficient grounds for exemptions in Member States. Goods traffic, for example, runs now smoothly at the EU's internal borders. According to the Commission, extensions to the exemptions would increase the drivers' fatigue and lead to a considerably higher road safety risk.
