International Maritime Organization to continue negotiating measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. IMO Member States are expected to decide the next steps in negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other topics to be discussed include specifications to the rules on the carbon intensity and energy efficiency of vessels, the regulation of ballast water and guidance on reducing underwater noise.

Unauthorised possession of jammers to become a criminal offence

On 23 April 2026, the Government submitted amendments to the Act on Electronic Communication Services for approval. The amendments apply to equipment that interfere with radio communications, so-called jammers. The act is scheduled to enter into force on 1 July 2026.

International Maritime Organization approves first international guidelines on ship registration to deter misuse of flags

Summary of comments on the legislative proposal for a location survey service

The consultation period ran from 29 January to 12 March 2026. On 21 April 2026, the Ministry published a summary of the 58 comments received.

Equality mainstreaming increases inclusion and promotes non-discrimination

Finland seeks EU funding for subsea cable repair capacity

A Finnish-led project has applied for EUR 9.55 million in European Commission funding to reinforce subsea cable repair capacity. The project is coordinated by the Finnish National Emergency Supply Agency and involves partners from Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the proposal on 16 April 2026.

Amendments to the Convention on Road Signs and Signals to be approved
